of these early investments don't pay off. >> let's turn to new jersey, where you are, a voter, james, and chris christie the republican governor looks like he's going to coast to re-election. but there's an interesting ballot initiative that would embed, raise the minimum wage and embed future minimum wage increases into the constitution. >> right. into the state constitution. it's knocking the state minimum wage up above about a point above the federal one going to about 8.5%, or excuse me $8.25 an hour i should say. this is really, when you look at young people, and their struggle to find work in new jersey, this is about the last thing we need. the -- our state has a higher unemployment rate than any other our anybodies, pennsylvania, new york, delaware, and really high, above the national average. so now you're taking that group of people that wants to come into the workforce, that want skills, that wants to show they can do a job, and you're making it that much harder for small businesses to hire them. >> steve, let's turn to virginia. which i believe is your state. and you've got that gov
will see a more moderate governor of nurnlgs chris christie in a blue state, rack up a pretty big victory. he is saying it is inevitable, people will start thinking of running for president 2016. on the flipside, democrats are having a republican governor after two democratic governors. virginia is now in the second tier of key presidential battleground, right below ohio and florida, a key swing state. everyone will study the demographics for lessons headed in 2016. democrats would like to get that governor's office back as they go forward. if you have chris christie win in new jersey, ken cuccinelli lose in virginia, a lot of people will say the tea party candidate cuccinelli took beating and the guy that sometimes sticks in the eye of the tea party won big. >> there is a message to be learned there. the president was if virginia campaigning for terry mcauliffe the democratic candidate this weekend. he said the outcome will say a lot for virginia's future and about the country's future. but i do wonder if that is necessarily the case. because both parties will not be picking the presiden
on tuesday, chris christie versus barbara buono. even though this week he admitted publicly he will not promise to actually serve out his term as governor. so his closing argument now is effectively, elect me even though i don't totally want the job and i can't say i won't quit half way through. still, though, the governor was up by 33 points in the most recent poll. the one interesting thing to watch in new jersey is if that big margin holds on election day, what are the down ballot consequences be of that in the state? new jersey democrats have an eight-seat majority in the senate. republicans are hoping that if christie wins big on tuesday that might have pro-republican consequences down the ballot in the state senate to whittle away at the democrats' majority. the senate is also the thing in washington state where a race for one specific senate seat is turning out to be fascinatingly expensive. republicans right now in washington control the state senate but it's really close and their control is only possible thanks to a couple of people crossing party lines to caucus with
